Non-Revenue Water (NRW)

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company (NWWEC) controls the administration of the water supply. As a measure to mitigate water shortages, it encourages the reduction of non-revenue water (NRW) using its own technologies. However, due to the deterioration of aging facilities, the average percentage of NRW is still in excess of 25%.

Tehran Water Conservation Demonstration

Objectives/Outcomes:

This demonstration project, supported by RCUWM-Tehran and partly funded by ESCAP, is part of the process to establish a range of in-house water savings measures which could be form the basis for a city-wide water efficiency plan for Tehran. Master Plan Study on Water Management in Kabul River Basin

  1. Analysing existing water resources conditions of Kabul basin;
  2. Water resources and demand assessment
  3. Analysing the options and selecting the best feasible projects for fulfilment of water demands with taking the environmental requirement into consideration
  4. Preparing the following plans with taking the natural, technical, socio- economical and financial constraints into account:
  • Developing agricultural and irrigation plans and water resources development projects;
  • Urban and industrial water supply plans;
  • Water quality management plans;
  • Demand management plans;

Urban Water Management in the Region (Inventory, Problem Assessments and Scenarios for Development)

In this report the demographic, economic and urbanization challenges of the region, as well as methodology and some preliminary results were presented.

Based on the analysis of these conducted studies, the following interventions should be addressed:

  • Develop water demand management strategy and campaign;
  • Improve wastewater collection and treatment systems;
  • Encourage reuse and recycling of treated wastewater;
  • Renovate or replace aging infrastructure by adapted systems;
  • Install leakage detection systems in water supply networks and reduce UFW;

Data Bank of UWM Literature, Organizations and Human Resources in the Region

The main objective of the project was to prepare an informative platform to enable access to the most relevant source data about existing literature, institutions concerned, and professionals involved in the region.
