The mission of UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC) is to support and strengthen the activities of the more than two dozen UN organizations and programmes already cooperating within the interagency mechanism known as UN-Water, and in particular to promote capacity development in water related issues. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is encouraging research and training in meteorology, operational hydrology and flood management, and assisting in coordinating the international aspects of such research and training. The mission of the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM-Tehran) is to transfer applicable scientific knowledge, and increase know-how and capacities in all cases and dimensions of UWM in order to promote sustainable development, and to undertake activities in this field in order to enhance human welfare within the region States.
Workshop objective and format
This training workshop is being developed by the World Meteorological Organization (through its Associated Programme on Flood Management) in cooperation with UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC) for flood-prone countries, cities, and communities, with the aim of scaling-up action on integrated flood management to contribute to a minimization of losses of life from flooding and to an efficient use of flood plain resources. This three-day course is designed to familiarize participants with the concept of Integrated Flood Management and prepare them to identify possible paths of action towards implementation of the concept in their own field of work. The course will provide participants an in depth exposure to the social, economic, environmental and institutional dimensions of flood management and allow them to develop an integrated perspective on floods, floodplains and the development process in their own country.
The total required time for the training course will be of 3 days and an additional day for a field visit. The audience will be top and mid-level managers/professionals in water resources management, disaster management, land use management and spatial planning, from 8-9 countries in Western Asia and Arab region including Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Oman, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Yemen. The maximum expected number of participants for the workshop is 25, including 4-5 participants from the host country plus WMO and UNW-DPC resource people. The language of the workshop will be English.
