Advances in Groundwater Management & New Tools and Strategy for Coping with Droughts

Freshwater is an important resource for human health, prosperity and security. Considering the finite nature, increasing demand, and deteriorating quality of freshwater, the need to protect and manage these resources properly is crucial. Arid and semi-arid areas face the greatest pressures to deliver and manage freshwater resources globally. Water scarcity and prolonged drought period caused various negative impacts in arid and semi-arid areas including overexploitation of groundwater and depletion of water table in aquifers.

Droughts remain a widely underestimated natural hazard because they develop very gradually, covering large areas, often going unnoticed […]

International Conference on Drought Management Strategies in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions

The frequency of natural disasters between 1990 and 2006, particularly water-related disasters, has increased markedly – as has the estimated economic damage they cause. Extreme events have also become more frequent. Between 1900 and March 2007, 16301 disaster events were recorded throughout the world – 6.27 billion people were affected; fatalities were more than 37.58 million and the estimated economic damage was more than US$1,790 billion. In terms of fatalities and the number of people affected, Asia is the region most vulnerable to water-related disasters, accounting for more than 45% of fatalities and more than 90% […]

International Conference on Water Resources and Climate Change in the MENA Region

In recent years there has been growing evidence that the earth’s climate will become warmer in the 21st century, which raises the essential question: What impacts will global warming have on the environment and human activities? Warming will cause hydrologic changes that will affect freshwater resources. These are among the most significant potential impacts of climate change. As the climate warms, there will be changes in the nature of global precipitation, evaporation, snow pack, stream flow and other factors that will affect freshwater supply and quality. Climate change will present challenges to water utilities, and planning […]

International Conference on Water Resources Management in the Islamic Countries

Today the role of water as a vital and precious substance, as a simulating force in socio-economic development and as key factor in water ecosystem conservation is obvious and clear.

While this importance is particularly prominent and tangible in the Islamic countries, which are located in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world and are suffering from intensive water shortage, our water management problems and challenges are not confined to the natural shortage of water resources: inappropriate methods of water management along with incremental deterioration of water quality have been additional […]
