Description: In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company (NWWEC) controls the administration of the water supply. As a measure to mitigate water shortages, it encourages the reduction of non-revenue water (NRW) using its own technologies. However, due to the deterioration of aging facilities, the average percentage of NRW is still in excess of 25%.

The Technical Session on Urban River Restoration was held by the Regional Centre on urban Water Management as a side event to the 15th National Hydraulic Conference as the largest gathering of the hydraulic-related activities. The regional workshop and roundtable discussion on “Exploring Different Approaches aimed at Overcoming Environmental Sustainability Challenges” was co-chaired by the Islamic Republic of Iran Ministry of Energy (in coordination with the Department of Environment and with the support of UNESCO Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM) – Tehran) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
