The Regional Center on Urban Water Management, as one of the centers under the auspices of UNESCO, has been hosting the International Drought Initiative (UNESCO-IDI) at the regional level since 2010, aiming to build capacity in drought risk management in the region. Given the necessity of adopting a modern approach to Integrated Drought Management (IDM) in the member states of the RCUWM Governing Board, which predominantly have arid and semi-arid climates, the Center has undertaken the task of compiling up-to-date global scientific materials, including reports and publications from the World Meteorological Organization’s Integrated Drought Management Program (WMO-IDMP), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the United Nations Development Programme’s Water Capacity Building Network (UNDP Cap-Net).
Since promoting and raising awareness about the management of extreme events (floods and droughts) is one of the Center’s key objectives in the region, a series of specialized webinars titled “Drought Management in Iran” will be held to promote the global IDM perspective at the national level and to implement preventive drought management in light of current conditions (such as reduced rainfall and consequently insufficient reservoir levels in some of the country’s watersheds). These webinars will leverage the scientific and technical expertise of the Water Research Institute (WRI), the Ministry of Energy. The first virtual event, was held on March 5, at the WRI, will feature a presentation on the forecast of the country’s water resources until the end of the current water year (September 2025), as well as the unveiling of the book “An Introduction to Integrated Drought Management (IDM).” The webinar poster and access link are provided below.
